Bérénice Lurton

Winemaker

Château Climens
Bordeaux, France

Bérénice Lurton is part of the fourth generation of winegrowers in her famous family, the youngest of Lucien Lurton’s ten children. Her father is one of the most passionate and successful winegrowers in Bordeaux, where he gathered a unique “collection” of famous estates that he has shared among his children in 1992. In 1971, he had purchased one of the most beautiful jewels of the Sauternes region, Château Climens. This First classified growth in 1855, named the ‘Lord of Barsac’ had enchanted him with the grace of its wines, sign of a truly exceptional terroir. Bérénice was 22 and just graduated from the Political Science Institute when she became the manager of Climens in 1992. Since then, she has put all her energy in what has become an obsession: create the most magical Climens every year, according to what nature and hard work can obtain. In that search for perfection, Bérénice and Frédéric Nivelle, the technical director at Château Climens since 1998, were aiming to a more holistic, natural and preventative way to manage the vineyards and respect the terroir. In that prospect, the entire vineyard was converted to biodynamic methods in 2010. Berenice is also fond of the food and wine matches that she has developed and promoted in order to show the prodigious versatility of Sauternes and Barsac wines. Due to their lively and elegant profile, her two wines, Cyprès de Climens and Château Climens, particularly lend themselves to gourmet adventures! Apart from her estate, Berenice’s life interests are her family, friends, but she’s also interested by all human and environmental concerns.
